Happy New Year!!!!

Weekend Recap:

With the popularity of social networks, Red Cross has been able to raise $21 million dollars for Haiti relief by texting Haiti to 90999. The Cowboys lost... so did the Ravens. On that note, Canes also lost... sigh. College sports: UNC lost to Wake!!!! Duke lost too... On campus, we beat Raleigh Charter! The girls basketball team won convincingly by almost 20 points (shout out to Bianca) while the boys won with a four point lead. Saturday, NCSSM hosted it's annual Mr. Unicorn beauty pagaent (shout out to Rebecca P. for the choreography).

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration and Service:

This year has been the first year that there have been no classes on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. To celebrate MLK Day, NCSSM heard a stiring speech by the Chancellor of NC Central University, and a standing encore performance by our very own Multicultural Peer Counselors (shout out to Caitlin C.). The assembly was followed by cultural, intellectual and volunteer sessions for the student body. In one weekend, NCSSM contributed more than 700 volunteer hours to 17 local nonprofit agencies!

  • NCSSM Guinness World Record Attempt:

Our sister hall (Sue Anne Lewis and 1E2E2D) has just been approved by Guiness World Records to attempt to break the current record of largest canned drive in 24 hours on Saturday, March 20th! WE NEED HELP!!!! Consider contributing in any of the following ways to have a successful drive and beat Canada!! We need donations for the raffle, recorders, runners, observers, callers, etc. We're trying to spread the word across NC, so tell your local newspapers and schools. If you have connections with local colleges and universities, let them know what we're doing and how they can help. For more information, please contact Sue Anne Lewis at lewis@ncssm.edu.

  • Winter Blues:

Many people are affected by the Winter Blues. We tend to stay inside more due to the longer days, and decrease of sunlight, which ultimately can affect our moods. The good news is sunny days are coming!

If you find yourself getting sad over a dreary day, here are a few tips to help:

  1. Open the blindes/ curtains and let natural come into the room
  2. Turn on the lights
  3. Exercise or participate in physical activity
  4. Talk to your counselor or the nurse

  • School Cleanliness:

The Health Inspector is coming next month! We will be having more (thorough) all hall cleans to prepare for his/her arrival. Prepare to clean like NEVER BEFORE!! All Hall Assignments will be posted in the coming weeks.

Expect to see the Residential Director and Assistant Director on hall more often in February.
