This Week... on hall (Dec. 13-19)

Weekend Recap:

Disney released it's first black cast with The Princess and the Frog. Reviews on facebook (not necessarily a reliable source) gave the movie 4 out of 5 stars, and an 84% "fresh" grade on http://www.rottentomatoes.com/ (a more "reliable" source in my opinion). CNN reported that only 20% of graduating medical students plan to enter primary care, down from 50% 10 years ago. CNN also reported on a new device called the Bionic Eye, created for those who suffer from a specific type of blindness to see again. Only 14 people are participating in this study. Some have had remarkable progress, while others have not seen a change. At NCSSM, we had a swim meet (which we won) and a basketball game off campus. Although we didn't win the basketball games, we showed great effort. Semi-formal was on Saturday night. It's still going on.. but the campus is quiet so I'm assuming it's going well. =)

December Updates

Hello Everyone,

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving/ Fall Break! Thank you to everyone for the birthday and Thanksgiving wishes. They were greatly appreciated. =) We only have a few weeks on campus before the Winter Break, but I have a few reminders and updates for everyone.

  • Welcome

We have two new residents joining 1C2C1D: Courtney Ogle and Rebecca Gregory! They are seniors coming from two different halls on campus. We are very excited to have them on our hall.

  • H1N1 Update

Many have signed the consent form allowing their child to receive the H1N1 vaccination at NCSSM. There were still a few students who were not able to receive the shot. The campus clinic is still offering H1N1 vaccines. Please encourage your daughter to visit the clinic M-F from 730am-430pm, if she has not done so already.

Volunteer Opportunities in December

I am a huge advocate for volunteering your time or resources to a worthy cause any time of the year. For those of you who are interested, consider joining us, or contacting your local volunteer services to find out what is happening in your town. Here are some of the of the fun opportunities for students to be a part of:

  1. Angel Tree: The Salvation Army is hosting their annual Angel Tree program. Volunteer to sponsor a child in the Durham area and provide gifts for their Christmas holiday. Contact me if you are interested. Gifts should be dropped off at the Bryan Front Desk by Monday, December 14th.
  2. Soles4Souls: Catherine Thriveni (a student at NCSSM) will be collecting new or LIGHTLY used shoes to donate to a local organization. For any students, or parents who would like to donate, there will be a box located on Reynolds 1D for drop-offs.
  3. 3. Sue Anne Lewis and Reynolds 1E2E2D will attempt to break the world record for the largest canned food drive in March. There will be interest meetings this Wednesday at 12:15pm and 7pm in the Lecture Hall. If you are interested in helping Sue Anne, please contact Sue Anne at lewis@ncssm.edu.
  4. Cards4Kids: Our very own Linda Yang will help any interested students create holiday cards for patients at Duke Children's Hospital. We will begin working on them next week. For more information, please contact Ariel or Linda.

Welcome to Bloglife

Hello Everyone,

We're going to try a new way to communicate from the halls of Reynolds 1C2C1D to the families and friends around the state. Please let me know what you think? Should we keep the newsletters, or try the blog? Please let me know, and leave a comment below!

Upcoming Events and Announcements:

  • First Trimester Exams: November 3-6, 2009.

Exams are normally scheduled at 9am, 130pm and 6pm each day for 2.5 hours. Exam schedules will be posted on AAG so students can figure out their individual schedule. During the scheduled exams, students who are not taking exams are expected to abide by Morgue Hours. Morgue hours are a set of guidelines that students must adhere to during Trimester Exams. Basically, Morgue Hours are stricter than quiet hours. Below are the main guidelines:

  1. Residence halls are to be extremely quiet at all times except that hour when Quiet hours are lifted from 830-930pm weekdays.
  2. Coed/group studying before 1030pm in Bryan, Hill and Hunt lobbies, ground Bryan/ Beall, the Student Center, library group rooms, Bryan labs, and available classrooms.
  3. Group study after 1030pm in hall lounges and student rooms with doors closed and in residence hall lobbies.
  4. Group or individual study between 12am and 1am in residence hall lobbies with SLI permission.
  5. The library must remain quiet for individuals who wish to study.
  6. Socializing and group study in the hallways is prohibited.
  7. Sounds of group study must not be heard outside of room or lounge doors.
  8. Curfew has been changed to 830pm Tuesday-Thursday. All other curfews, including in-room remain in effect.
  9. Discuss and agree on music/headphone use. Be respectful of your roommate(s) and hall mates!

Quiet hours go into affect before and after morgue hours. Quiet hours and morgue hours are only lifted from 830-930pm each night to give students time to complete their housekeeping, to relax and release any emotions they may have incurred during the day.

At this time, our RLAs will plan study break activities for the residents on hall. We will also have candy treats for everyone. If you are interested in providing a study break snack, please let me know and we will coordinate it best with your schedule.

  • Trimester Reports

Each student will receive a trimester report from their teachers, work service supervisor, and SLI. These reports will highlight your daughters accomplishments and/or weaknesses in their 1st trimester classes, work service and residence halls. This year, the trimester report will be available on FOCUS.

  • Trimester Break: November 6-11, 2009

Residence Halls close on Friday, November 6th at 5pm and open on Wednesday, November 11th at 12pm.

Due to the long break, students are expected to clean their rooms thoroughly (sweeping and mopping). It is expected that all students unplug all their appliances, including refrigerators. This is also a good time to go through the wardrobes and dressers and take home any Fall apparel in preparation for the winter season. Trimester sign-out will continue in the same manner as Extended weekends. Students are expected to sign-out on the Extended sign-out sheets posted on the entrance door of their sub-hall. If the student is not going home that night, going home on/before Thursday, November 5th or returning to NCSSM on/after Thursday, November 12th, they must fill out an overnight sign-out form.

    • Thanksgiving Potluck Luncheon: Sunday, November 15th at 2pm

1C2C1D and 2nd East Hunt (our brother hall) will participate in our annual Thanksgiving Potluck on Sunday, November 15th at 2pm in the Woolworth Room. Students are encouraged to bring a dish of your choice. If any parents are interested in participating, please email me as soon as possible.

    • Angel Tree Program: November 16- December 14, 2009

The Service Learning Board is hosting the Angel Tree Program this year! If you are interested in sponsoring a child in Durham (buy Christmas presents from their wish lists), please email me. Angel Tree participants are between the ages of a few months to 13 years old, and their wish list ranges from book bags and clothes, to toys, games and videos. For more information, please contact me or your local Salvation Army.

    • Fall Break/ Thanksgiving Break: November 20-29, 2009

See Trimester break instructions. Same rules apply. Residence Halls close on Friday, November 20th at 5pm and open on Sunday, November 29th at 12pm.

    • Ariel's Birthday: Sunday, November 22, 2009!!!! =)

Shameless plug.. I know, but yay, it's my birthday!!! Although gifts, messages and cards are not necessary, they are welcomed! =)
